Gallery tour

Our new painting

Our new painting

This Saturday we decided that we go and see the different galleries that we have noticed around downtown Calgary. We went to yoga class, then out for a lunch at Bumpy’s – very nice little café with excellent choice of everything. We had printed out a map with addresses of all the galleries that we had found. Most of them were on the 11th Avenue SW. The first one we went to was Webster Gallery. It had exhibitions on both floors and an interesting artist who paints in 3D – there were actually 3D glasses that you could borrow to look at the paintings. Réal Fournier is the name of the painter and you can see the pictures here: http://www.webstergalleries.com/title.php?page=1&data=search_array&ititlenum=16544. We went on and popped into some of the furniture and cooking stores in between. There was one gallery that had an some kind of party going on, we went in as well and looked around with lots of people discussing around us.

There was a gallery that is run by artists, but this one was the most boring – all of the little shops were closed when we got there. The artists must obviously have been doing some art instead of displaying it.

The last one we went into was Gainsborough Gallery on the 5th Avenue SW that is celebrating its 90th birthday this year. They focus on the Canadian artists. There were lots of good things in there, but we really liked the pictures of Nathalie Chiasson. She uses this really interesting technique of painting that is made of coffee and acrylic and looks like it is old. And she paints a lot of wine bottles that we really like. So we ended taking one of the paintings home for trial. This is another really good feature that the gallery has – you can take a painting home for 10 days without paying for it. They take your credit card copy, but will call you when the 10 days are over whether you want the picture and they should just charge us or whether we return the picture.

We took the picture home and after positioning it on different walls ended up putting on one and we’ll see how we like it hanging here for a bit. I’m guessing we will end up buying it after all.

We topped the very cultural day off with going to see A Good Day to Die Hard at our local movie theatre. It was like the Die Hard movies are – lots of action and tough guys, leave your critical mind, that wants to ask how is it possible to drive from Moscow to Tchernobyl in one night, at home and you’ll enjoy it!
