We went to see Diana Krall in concert yesterday at Jubilee Auditorium. It looked liked all seats were sold out. Diana Krall is one of my husband’s favourites and he has already been to her concert in Barcelona 3 years ago. I started listening to her when my husband moved his iPod to our flat and we’ve enjoyed her music with quite many dinners. She has a fantastic voice – contralto and with jazz and piano it sounds mesmerizing. (I’ve always preferred contralto to soprano). The concert was based on her new album ‘Glad Rag Doll’ and it is based on the music from the twenties. Before the concert they showed the Betty Boop cartoons and there were different 20ies films running behind the stage accompanying the music. We enjoyed the experience very much.
Diana Krall is from Canada – Nanaimo in British Columbia more precisely, but she said that her Mom is from near Calgary and said that for her it’s great to be home. She is quite a talker and spoke about her kids and husband (her husband is Elvis Costello) and how she is drawn to rain and the darker side of things between the songs. The audience loved her and when she did a ‘wish for a song’ session, lots of people shouted out her well-known songs. She was also called back and presented 3 more songs.
Jubilee Auditorium is not too far from us. We went to our nearby pub for a dinner before the concert – had lamb burger with salad and sweet potato fries (very yummy), my husband had fish and chips (yes, it’s an English pub :)). We took a taxi to get to the concert – since we were not quite sure where it is and how long it takes, but the queue of cars going to the concert was very long, so we hopped off and walked the rest of the way. Coming back we did not even bother with taxi or the train that stops exactly next to the Auditorium, but walked back and enjoyed the chilly Calgary air.
It was a lovely Valentine’s day eve. On the day itself I got a lovely card with drawn flowers (did not know that my husband draws quite well – at least flowers) and a promise that I can go and have a massage of my choosing. Very nice indeed! 🙂
