At home

Enjoying a quiet day with my husband at home. Both of us sitting in front of our computers and doing our stuff. Every now and then I get a call to come over and help him – mainly with logging into his Estonian bank account that he thinks is too complicated for non-Estonians. I just think it’s more secure this way.

There was a minimal amount of snow today as an aftermath to the huge snowstorm Nemo that hit the East Coast last night. 3 feet of snow in Connecticut in one night!! But our flurries here are gone and the sun has melted whatever came down.

We’ll be having lunch at home (pasta with tunafish and salmon) and then heading for a workout at the YMCA. We signed up there last weekend – YMCA has the best facilities of the gyms we tried during January and also they have a good working steam room. We miss a proper sauna from back home, but steam room is as close as we can get to it here.

Then we are also planning to go see a movie later in the evening. Since we don’t have a TV yet, it is a good way of entertainment – actually probably better than watching telly.

We have been invited to have lunch tomorrow with some Estonians who have lived in Calgary for 19 years. I contacted the Estonian Heritage Society here (http://www.aehs.ca/heritage/index.html) and that’s how we met. It turns out that according to the last census there was 1500 people in Alberta who marked Estonian as their heritage. There are not so many newly migrated Estonians who have contacted the Society, but many who have lived here for generations. Lots do not speak the language any more, but still get together to celebrate Estonian traditions – Jaanipäev (Midsummer) and Independence Day. That’s the first invitation to lunch that we have received here in Calgary and it is very nice to make some new friends.
